Every few months, the seasons change into spring, summer, fall, or winter. Inspired by these changes Niantic added Seasons to Pokémon GO back in December 2020. Each Season in the mobile game is three months-long and features special events, certain Pokémon appearing more often in the wild (in certain areas and hemispheres), refreshed Egg pool, and more. Instead of being named after the spring, summer, fall, or winter seasons, each Season in Pokémon GO is named after an idea/theme.
For December 2022, a new Season has begun and it’s called Mythical Wishes.
What is the Season of Mythical Wishes?
The Season of Mythical Wishes is Pokémon GO’s 9th in-game Season and starts on Thursday, December 1st, 2022 at 10 a.m. your local time. During this Season, Niantic will spotlight the Hoenn region with its very own Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn events (including an in-person event in Las Vegas, NV, and a global event). As for anything plot-related concerning Professor Willow, Rhi, and any more Ultra Beast appearances, we’ll just have to see how the Season unfolds!
When is the Season of Mythical Wishes?
The Season of Mythical Wishes takes place over three months – starting on Thursday, December 1st, 2022 at 10 a.m. and ending on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at 10 a.m. your local time.
What is the focus of the Season of Mythical Wishes?
While the Hoenn region appears to be in the spotlight during the Season of Mythical Wishes (thanks to an in-person and global Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn), wishing will also play a role during various events. Trainers will be given different Timed Research during three different events and can pick one of the following three bonuses:
- Winter Holiday Part 2 event (Friday, December 23rd, 2022 at 10 a.m. until Saturday, December 31st, 2022 at 8 p.m. your local time):
- Hatch Distance Bonus: 1/2 Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed into Incubators during the event period
- XP Bonus: 2× XP for catching Pokémon
- Stardust Bonus: 2× Stardust for catching Pokémon

- Candy Bonus:2× Candy for catching Pokémon
- Daily Adventure Incense Bonus: 2× Daily Adventure Incense duration (will be 30 minutes per day during the event)
Pokémon debut: Kecleon
After years of being spotted in the game’s files thanks to a datamine, Kecleon has finally appeared in Pokémon GO. Debuting after January 2023’s Community Day event (Saturday, January 7th, 2023 after 5 p.m. your local time), Kecleon can be found “in the wild” via PokéStops.
Similar to when a Team GO Rocket member takes over a PokéStop, Kecleon will do the same, but much more stealthy. Kecleon will be “invisible” on the PokéStop and will prevent Trainers from spinning the Photo Disc (you can spot the Pokémon’s red band marking across its belly on the Photo Disc). You must tap the Kecleon (repeatedly) in order to get it to “fall off” the PokéStop. When successful, Trainers can successfully spin the PokéStop and see Kecleon “spawn” on the overworld map. Trainers can tap on Kecleon to enter a catch encounter scenario. From there, good luck with your catch and finally adding Kecleon to your Pokédex in Pokémon GO!
Some Additional Notes:
- Details are still developing since this is a new development, but Trainers have reported the following findings:
- Kecleon will be at the same PokéStop for all Trainers.
- It’s believed that Kecleon PokéStop locations will change every 2 hours.
- Within the 2-hour time frame, Kecleon can reappear on the same PokéStop. Specific cooldown times for reappearance have yet to be shared.
- Kecleon can appear at PokéStops taken over by Team GO Rocket members. Trainers must defeat the Team GO Rocket Grunt/Leader/Boss before knocking Kecleon off the PokéStop.
Are there any new features being added during the Season of Mythical Wishes?
Yes, new Pokémon size classifications are being added to Pokémon GO during this season. Select Pokémon may now appear in the following sizes: XXS and XXL. According to an official Pokémon GO blog post published on December 8th, 2022, the first Pokémon to use these new size classifications are Poochyena, Mightyena, and Mawile. On Tuesday, January 17th, 2023, a new official Pokémon GO blog post confirmed that all Pokémon currently available in Pokémon GO are now available in XXS and XXL size classifications.
Size comparisons of XXS (left) to average (center) to XXL (right).
For more information, you can read the blog post from December 2023. There, it goes into more detail about how these new size classifications will be shown on the catch encounter screen, tracking in the Pokédex, and more.
