Every few months, the seasons change into spring, summer, fall, or winter. Inspired by these changes Niantic added Seasons to Pokémon GO back in December 2020. Each Season in the mobile game is three months-long and features special events, certain Pokémon appearing more often in the wild (in certain areas and hemispheres), refreshed Egg pool, and more. Instead of being named after the spring, summer, fall, or winter seasons, each Season in Pokémon GO is named after an idea/theme.

For September 2022, a new Season has begun and it’s called the Season of Light.

What is the Season of Light?

The Season of Light is Pokémon GO’s 8th in-game Season and starts on Thursday, September 1st, 2022 at 10 a.m. your local time. During this Season, Niantic welcomes back Professor Will from his disappearance during the Season of GO. He also returns with new research and discoveries around Cosmog, a legendary Pokémon of the Alola region. Plus, throw in the sun, moon, and stars imagery from the official Season of Light trailer, and it looks like Lunala and Solgaleo might debut later this Season!

When is the Season of Light?

The Season of Light takes place over three months – starting on Thursday, September 1st, 2022 at 10 a.m. and ending on Thursday, December 1st, 2022 at 9:59 a.m. your local time.

What is the focus for the Season of Light?

Professor Willow is back! During his absence, Professor Willow discovered a mysterious Pokémon – Cosmog!

A Season-exclusive Special Research will be available from Thursday, September 1st, 2022 at 10 a.m. until Thursday, December 1st, 2022 at 9:59 a.m. your local time. The Special Research will be released in three different batches and Trainers will be able to “bond with the Legendary Pokémon Cosmog” (a.k.a. catch this little guy and add ’em to your Pokédex).

For full details for this Special Research, look for the “What is the Season of Light’s Special Research?” section (below the Raid list).

There is also a season-long Timed Research focused on the GO Battle League. You can find a list of tasks and rewards in the “What is the Season of Light’s Timed Research for the GO Battle League?” section (below the Special Research section).

What are the bonuses for the Season of Light?

The following bonuses will be active during the entire Season of Light:

  • Increased Incense effectiveness while moving
  • Up to two free Raid Passes per day by spinning Gym Photo Discs
  • Increased damage for Pokémon participating in Raids remotely
  • Guaranteed Gifts from PokéStop spins
  • Extra Stardust from Gifts
  • Additional Items from Research Breakthroughs (Including 1 Premium Battle Pass)
  • Increased Stardust reward for Research Breakthroughs
