May Day is a celebratory day with a fascinating history. Originally meant to celebrate the change of the seasons, the May 1st holiday has changed over the last 100 years to celebrate laborers and workers’ rights. In the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this translates into Tom Nook giving the island representative and residents a slight reprieve with a free May Day tour.

How to participate in the May Day event

Available from May 1st through May 7th, Tom Nook has left a May Day Ticket at Dodo Airlines. Talking to Orville, he will mention that he has your ticket; you can use it by selecting the “I want to fly!” answer followed by the “Use May Day Ticket.” choice. Before boarding for your May Day Tour, you will have to leave your inventory behind, tools and all. DAL will hold onto your belongings and return them to you when you arrive back home.

A relaxing getaway is just a flight away, but it turns out Mr. Nook’s May Day Tour isn’t a “sit and relax on the beach” kind of trip – it’s a maze! Utilizing the hedges and shrubs from the Version 1.2.0 update, you’ll have to maneuver your way through a tricky maze, picking up a shovel, worn axe, native fruit, and materials to make an axe to reach the end. Luckily, you can reset the maze at any time via the “! Rescue Service” app if you get stuck or want to play the maze again!

What prizes can you get from the May Day event?

You can earn 10 prizes in total from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons May Day event:

  •  Rover’s briefcase
  •  Nine Bell vouchers

Rover’s briefcase is a decorative item that doesn’t do anything special, but it’s exclusive to this event, so don’t miss out on it! The nine Bell vouchers, meanwhile, can be sold to Timmy and Tommy Nook for a total of 27,000 Bells.

Navigating the maze and finding Rover

Throughout the May Day Tour maze, there are some goodies scattered around as well as a familiar face camping at the end. Rover, a beloved cat NPC who would greet new players in Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, was nowhere to be found at the beginning of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Luckily, his arrival was only slightly delayed and we can briefly visit the roaming cat! Upon completing the maze, talk to Rover and he’ll end up giving you a new item, Rover’s briefcase. You’ll be able to take this gift back home and up to a total of nine Bell vouchers that are scattered throughout the maze. Four will be nearby Rover, but the other five are stuck behind three rocks and proper fruit management will be needed to get them!

Once you are done with the May Day Tour and want to leave, Wilbur will take Rover’s Briefcase from you as well as any Bell vouchers. Any items that you picked up on the island – tools, shrubs, flowers, materials, etc. – will be left behind. After leaving the May Day Tour, you will not be able to return to the island.

Upon landing back at home, your inventory before-flight will be back and you will have up to two letters from DAL sitting inside your mailbox. You can also talk to Tom Nook and tell him whether or not you enjoyed this event.

How to complete a perfect run (get all nine Bell vouchers)

Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough on how to complete a perfect run during the May Day event and get all nine Bell vouchers!

  1. Collect the Shovel.
  2. Dig up the shrub on your left.
    1. Collect the native fruit and eat it.
  3. Dig up the tree blocking the path and move forward.
    1. Hop over the two “holes” ahead, passing the 3 small hedges.
    2. Make a right down towards the three scattered wood materials and collect them.
  4. Return to the center path and go forward, passing the 3 small hedges and the corridor you previously used.
    1. Take a left, hoping over the hole, moving forward to collect the tree branch on the ground.
    2. Continue through the path to hop over another hole and collect the 3 tree branches, stone, and Worn Axe on the maze’s right side.
  5. Go back to the top left corner of the maze and cut down the tree with the Worn Axe.
    1. The Worn Axe will break after this.
    2. Either dig up the tree stump or sit and shuffle across it to collect 1 tree branch and 2 native fruit.
  6. Return to the center maze path.
    1. Jump over hole, landing between the first two small hedges.
      1. Take the path between these two hedges, jumping over two holes, and go towards the rock.
    2. Eat 1 native fruit and break the rock.
    3. Enter the area and collect 1 iron nugget.
  7. Double back to the center of the maze, continuing to take a path that will drop you to the right side of the maze.
    1. Find the rock blocking pathway.
    2. Eat 1 native fruit and break the rock.
    3. Collect DIY recipes for Flimsy Axe and Axe if needed.
    4. Eat 1 native fruit in order to dig up and remove the tree blocking Simple DIY Workbench.
    5. Craft a Flimsy Axe, then an Axe using materials gathered.
  8. With Axe in hand, go to the left side of the maze where a tree is blocking a small alcove containing 2 native fruits.
    1. Chop down the tree and dig up/slide across the tree stump.
    2. Collect 2 native fruits.
  9. Exit alcove and take the North path, following it and coming back to the center path.
    1. Jump over hole to the path with 3 small hedges.
    2. Take the path between the first 2 hedges.
    3. Follow this path to a tree blocking a path.
    4. Cut the tree down, remove or shuffle over the stump, and follow the path.
    5. Jump over the hole to the path that contains 1 native fruit.
  10. Head towards the back of the maze where 3 trees are located.
    1. Cut down all 3 trees and clear the tree stumps/shuffle over them.
  11. You’ve reached the exit! Now talk to Rover!
  12. To the left of Rover is a shrub blocking an entrance to a small alcove.
    1. Dig up the shrub and enter to collect 4 Bell vouchers.
  13. Continue to dig up the shrubs above the hedges, allowing you to take a left.
    1. Take the path to the beach and head south to where there are 3 rocks.
    2. Eat the remaining 3 native fruits and break all 3 rocks.
    3. Enter the alcove and collect 5 Bell vouchers.
