Every few months, the seasons change into spring, summer, fall, or winter. Inspired by these changes Niantic added Seasons to Pokémon GO back in December 2020. Each Season in the mobile game is three months long and features special events, certain Pokémon appearing more often in the wild (in certain areas and hemispheres), refreshed Egg pool, and more. Instead of being named after the spring, summer, fall, or winter seasons, each Season in Pokémon GO is named after an idea/theme.
For June 2023, a new Season has begun and it’s called Hidden Gems.
What is the Season of Hidden Gems?
The Season of Hidden Gems is Pokémon GO’s 11th in-game Season and starts on Thursday, June 1st, 2023 at 10 a.m. your local time. During this Season, Niantic will celebrate Pokémon GO’s 7th anniversary via a special anniversary event and multiple Pokémon GO Fest events. We’re also seeing teases of Diancie’s reveal at Pokémon GO Fest with Carbink entering the game.
When is the Season of Hidden Gems?
The Season of Hidden Gems takes place over three months – starting on Thursday, June 1st, 2023 at 10 a.m. and ending on Friday, September 1st, 2023 at 10 a.m. your local time.
What is the focus of the Season of Hidden Gems?
The focus on the Season of Hidden Gems is a mix. Pokémon GO’s anniversary and Pokémon GO Fest events will be taking place in July and August. The Season of Hidden Gems has an overall theme of treasure hunting and looking for previous gems (hello Carbink and Diancie). We’ll know more for certain as the season continues.
Are there any new features being added during the Season of Hidden Gems?
On the official Season of Hidden Gems site, Pokémon debuts and some permanent game changes are currently listed. There might be more features added as the season progresses.
Pokémon debut: Sandygast, Palossand, Carbink, and more?
So far it’s been confirmed that Sandygast, Palossand, and Carbink will be available in Pokémon GO during the Season of Hidden Gems.
- Sandygast and Palossand will be available when the Water Festival: Beach Week event kicks off.
- Carbink’s debut is tied to a Special Research that Trainers can get if they purchase a Pokémon GO Fest ticket (global/worldwide edition) prior to Wednesday, July 5th, 2023.
- Diancie will debut during Pokémon GO Fest 2023’s in-person and global/worldwide events (via the event’s Special Research).
Shadow Pokémon debut: Shiny Shadow Kanto Legendary Birds?
As of May 29th, 2023, it has been confirmed that Shadow Articuno will be available in 5-Star Shadow Raids in June (select weekends only). Given the limited availability, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to guess that Shadow Zapdos and Shadow Moltres will star in 5-Star Shadow Raids in July and August. (Sadly, that might not be the case with no Shadow Zapdos in July.) Luckily with these Shadow Pokémon previously debuting in Pokémon GO, this time their shiny versions will be active for the first time.
Permanent changes – Remote Raid damage and Field Research rotation
Shared as the fine print on the Season of Hidden Gems dedicated page, a previous seasonal bonus will become a permanent change in Pokémon GO, and Field Research task rotation patterns will be less frequent.
- Remote Raid damage: the damage dealt by Pokémon participating in raids remotely will be permanently increased to the same amount of damage dealt by Pokémon participating in raids in-person.
- Field Research task rotation patterns: Starting this Season, Field Research tasks that previously rotated on a monthly basis will now rotate Seasonally.
- Field Research tasks that award an encounter with Spinda will still rotate monthly.
Style Shop and Avatar Closet update
The Style Shop and Avatar Closet and customization menu are getting a tune-up. For more details, you can check out the blog post on the official Pokémon GO blog. Keep in mind that as the upgrade rolls out, Trainers have been reporting a number of bugs (i.e.: wearing clothes “permanently” that weren’t purchased in the Style Shop).
Pokémon GO Battle League reward changes
After the end of GO Battle Weekend: Clay (ends Sunday, July 2nd, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. your local time), the following reward changes will be made in the GO Battle League for the remainder of the Season:
- All rewards from the Premium Track will be adjusted to be in the same reward order as the rewards in the Basic Track, but in increased amounts.
- Trainers level 31 and up will have the chance to receive a Rare Candy XL as an item reward after their second win in a set.
Paid Masterwork Research Story – All-in-One #151
During the 7th Anniversary Party event, Trainers who DID NOT purchase a ticket for Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto in 2021 can purchase a ticket to access All-in-One #151, the Masterwork Research Story. For US$4.99 OR US$5.00 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you’ll get the All-in-One #151 which rewards Trainers with a Shiny Mew catch encounter, a Mew Shirt (Avatar Item), and other items.
Sales for this Masterwork Research will go live on Thursday, July 6th, 2023 at 10 a.m. your local time (and sales will end on Wednesday, July 12th, 2023 at 8 p.m. your local time). According to Niantic, “[t]ickets are nonrefundable (subject to applicable law and the exceptions set forth in the Terms of Service).” Tickets for this research cannot be gifted to Trainers you’re friends with.
More details about this Masterwork Research Story can be found in the Pokémon GO’s 7th Anniversary Party event guide.
PokéStop Showcases
Available to all Trainers as of the Pokémon GO’s 7th Anniversary Party event, PokéStop Showcases are Pokémon GO’s version of Pokémon Contests. Trainers can show off a Pokémon at PokéStops that are actively hosting Showcases (not all PokéStops will be hosting these events). There, a Showcase’s theme and rules can be viewed and Trainers can submit a Pokémon that qualifies for the Showcase (i.e.: the biggest Squirtle). For more information about PokéStop Showcases, you can read the official Pokémon GO blog post detailing the new feature.
Routes
Rolling out across the globe, Routes is a new gameplay feature in Pokémon GO. Take walking tours from Gyms and beyond to explore your hometown, cities, and more. Plus, you might just find some Zygarde Cells in your travels. For more information on Routes, you can check out the dedicated Routes info page on the official Pokémon GO website.
Reminder – Pokémon XXS and XXL sizes
The Pokémon size classification was expanded to include XXS and XXL sizing during the Season of Mythical Wishes. As of Tuesday, January 17th, 2023, an official Pokémon GO blog post confirmed that all Pokémon currently available in Pokémon GO are now available in XXS and XXL size classifications.
Size comparisons of XXS (left) to average (center) to XXL (right).
For more information, you can read the blog post from December 2023. There, it goes into more detail about how these new size classifications will be shown on the catch encounter screen, tracking in the Pokédex, and more.
Reminder – Kung Fu Tea collaboration
Announced on April 24th, 2023 via the official Pokémon GO blog, Kung Fu Tea shops in the US and Canada will be transformed into Gyms and PokéStops beginning Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023. In-store, discounts will be made available for Pokémon GO Trainers. Plus, more details will be announced later this month. Chances are those details will be about the Team Mystic, Team Valor, and Team Instinct-themed drink cups. You can check out Kung Fu Tea’s official website and social media channels (i.e.: Instagram) for more information.
Reminder – Shadow Raids courtesy of Team GO Rocket
Debuting during the Season of Rising Heroes, Shadow Raids are here to stay. For more information on Shadow Raids, you can read the dedicated Shadow Raids post on the official Pokémon GO blog.
