Team GO Rocket is back and they’re crashing the Galarian Expedition event. Shadow Raids are getting a shake up, Team GO Rocket Boss Giovanni will be battling with a new Shadow Pokémon (along with Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders), the season-long Special Research will be getting a few more steps, and more. Pokémon GO’s Season of Max Out – Galarian Expedition: Taken Over
Begins: Tuesday, October 8th, 2024 at 12 a.m. your local time.
Ends: Friday, October 11th, 2024 at 8 p.m. your local time.
Pokémon debuts – Shadow Caterpie, Shadow Mankey, Shadow Roggenrola, Shadow Venipede, Shadow Karrablst, Shadow Shelmet, and Shadow Heatran
Shadow Caterpie, Shadow Mankey, Shadow Roggenrola, Shadow Venipede, Shadow Karrablst, Shadow Shelmet, and Shadow Heatran debut in Pokémon GO. Technically, Shadow Metapod, Shadow Butterfree, Shadow Primeape, Shadow Annihilape, Shadow Boldore, Shadow Gigalith, Shadow Whirlipede, Shadow Scolipede, Shadow Escavalier, and Shadow Accelgor debut as well, but those Shadow Pokémon will only be available via evolution.
- Shadow Caterpie debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Metapod and Shadow Butterfree can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Caterpie.
- Shadow Mankey debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Primeape and Shadow Annihilape can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Mankey.
- Shadow Roggenrola debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Boldore and Shadow Gigalith can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Roggenrola.
- Shadow Venipede debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Whirlipede and Shadow Scolipede can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Venipede.
- Shadow Karrablast debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Escavalier can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Karrablast.
- Shadow Shelmet debuts. Once the event rolls out, we’ll know if this Shadow Pokémon will be available by battling Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Shadow Accelgor can be obtained, but only by evolving a Shadow Shelmet.
- Shadow Heatran: Team GO Rocket Boss Giovanni will have Shadow Heatran on his team. Seek him out with a Super Rocket Radar, defeat him in battle, and you’ll get the chance to catch Shadow Heatran.
Event Bonuses
- Team GO Rocket will appear more frequently at PokéStops and in balloons.
- Team GO Rocket balloons will be appearing every 2 hours (instead of the standard 6 hours).
- You can use a Charged TM to help a Shadow Pokémon forget the Charged Attack Frustration.
The Galarian Expedition event also happens during its Taken Over counterpart, but the “main” event has no exclusive event bonuses. And the Mega Mawile Raid Day event takes place after this event, but one bonus will be active prior (and during the Galarian Expedition: Taken Over event, depending on your region):
- The Remote Raid limit will increase to 20 from Friday, October 11th, 2024 at 5 p.m. PDT to Saturday, October 12th, 2024 at 8 p.m. PDT.
Event Boxes
If any special event boxes or bundles are released during the event, they’ll be listed here once the event is live. Daily bundles are also available and can be viewed online via the Pokémon GO Web Store.
- Team GO Rocket Box (300 PokéCoins): 1 Incubator, 1 Rocket Radar, and 1 Premium Battle Pass.
Team GO Rocket and Shadow Pokémon
- The following Pokémon have been turned into Shadow Pokémon for the first time: Shadow Caterpie, Shadow Mankey, Shadow Roggenrola. Shadow Venipede, Shadow Karrablast, and Shadow Shelmet. Shadow Heatran also debuts, but is only available when defeating Team GO Rocket Boss Giovanni.
- Shadow Metapod, Shadow Butterfree, Shadow Primeape, Shadow Annihilape, Shadow Boldore, Shadow Gigalith, Shadow Whirlipede, Shadow Scolipede, Shadow Escavalier, and Shadow Accelgor are also available. They can only be acquired through evolution.
- Along with these Shadow Pokémon debuts, they and their evolved versions can also be Purified (if specific conditions are met).
- Certain Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket members may be shiny, but no new additions have been spotted yet. Niantic did not specify any Shiny Shadow Pokémon debuts.
- Shadow Metapod, Shadow Butterfree, Shadow Primeape, Shadow Annihilape, Shadow Boldore, Shadow Gigalith, Shadow Whirlipede, Shadow Scolipede, Shadow Escavalier, and Shadow Accelgor are also available. They can only be acquired through evolution.

Paid Ticket – Masterwork Research: Master Ball
During the Galarian Expedition and Galarian Expedition: Taken Over events, Trainers can purchase a ticket to access a Masterwork Research. For US$7.99 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you’ll get the Masterwork Research: Master Balls which rewards Trainers with the following items: 1 Master Ball, 18,000 XP, 10,000 Stardust, encounters with event-themed Pokémon (i.e.: Galarian Farfetch’d* and Galarian Mr. Mime*), and more
According to Niantic, “[t]ickets are nonrefundable (subject to applicable law and the exceptions set forth in the Terms of Service).” Tickets can also be gifted to Trainers you’re friends with provided that you have a Friendship level of Great Friends or higher with them. This can be done via the in-game shop and by selecting the “Gift” button instead of the “Buy” button. Tickets purchased for friends are nonrefundable as well.
