Pokémon’s fourth generation was full of evolutions, including a handful that utilized newly introduced held items to trigger them. These can happen by either leveling up or being traded while holding the necessary item, though a few have additional requirements, such as being locked to a certain time. One of these evolutions is Dusknoir, the Gen IV evolution of Gen I’s Magmar.

Read on to learn where to find Magby and Magmar and eventually evolve them into Magmortar!

Where to find Magby and Magmar in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Magmortar was the new evolution of Magmar, obtainable only via trading with its own held item – the Magmarizer. While Magby could previously be caught by slotting a copy of Leaf Green into your DS while playing a Gen IV game, now it’s only available in the Grand Underground, exclusively in Shining Pearl. Be on the lookout for Magby as a rare spawn in various Pokémon Hideaways like the Volcanic Cave, Sandsear Cave, and Typhlo Cavern (if you see lava, you’re in the right place), and then get it to level 30 to evolve into Magmar.

If you have Brilliant Diamond, your only hopes of getting a Magby or Magmar are by trading from Shining Pearl.

Once you have Magmar, you’ll need an Magmarizer. After hunting one down (see below), you’ll be able to trade your Magmar while it holds the Magmarizer to evolve it into Magmortar.

Where to find a Magmarizer in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The only way to get an Magmarizer in Pokémon Shining Pearl is by catching or stealing one from a wild Magby in the Grand Underground. There, Magby have a 5% chance of holding one. You can catch Magby, or use an attack like Thief to try and snag it from any that you come across.

In Brilliant Diamond, the only way to get an Magmarizer is by trading one from Shining Pearl.
