Space is a very big place — certainly too large for just a single plumber. Thank goodness Mario’s got a brother to join in on this star-flung adventure! Super Mario Galaxy allowed players to orbit through every corner of its universe as Luigi. While he shows up during Mario’s adventure, it’ll take some extra effort to rocket into Super Luigi Galaxy. Want to know how to unlock and play as Luigi in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version of Super Mario Galaxy? Keep reading!
How do I unlock Luigi in Super Mario Galaxy?
While you’ll be able to run into Luigi as soon as you reach the Ghostly Galaxy, he won’t be playable until much later. In order to unlock and play as Luigi, you’ll need to collect 120 Power Stars as Mario and then defeat the game’s final boss. If you’ve already beaten it before you had that many Power Stars, you’ll need to do so again.
Once you do you’ll be able to play through the entire game from the beginning, this time as Luigi! As is tradition, he’ll have weaker traction than his bro and jumps higher, but he also runs faster. Depending on the situation, all of these can be good or bad changes. That said, playing as Luigi can be more difficult, since his air drains faster when you spin underwater, and the Cosmic Luigi races are more difficult.
Other than that, Luigi’s name will replace Mario’s at various points. The Luigi you run into in the Ghostly Galaxy (and who will then hang out at the Comet Observatory and help with Stars a few times) will actually still be Luigi, causing Rosalina to call them twins. The Mailtoad will also sometimes deliver you 20 1-Up Mushrooms.
