Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a second chance for this Wii U gem in more ways than one. Yes, it’s back and ready to reach a wider audience than ever thanks to the Switch, but it also will now have amiibo support! The original 3D World release was out a year before these figures hit shelves, but now it’s giving four of them unique functionality.
How to scan amiibo in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Scanning amiibo in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is simple. All you have to do is hold down “Left” on the D-Pad on your controller, then place your amiibo figure over your controller’s NFC reader. You’ll hear an in-game jingle, and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your amiibo’s labor immediately!
What amiibo are compatible with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury?
All amiibo are compatible with the game, but only a handful have special benefits. These are:
- Cat Mario
- Cat Peach
- Bowser (Super Smash Bros. series)
- Bowser (Super Mario Bros. series)
- Bowser (Wedding Outfit) (Super Mario Odyssey series)
- Bowser Jr.
Hammer Slam Bowser and Dark Hammer Slam Bowser, the two Skylander-amiibo hybrid figures, also work the same as the three regular Bowser amiibo.
What do amiibo do in Super Mario 3D World?
Two amiibo are being released to coincide with the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury launch. The Cat Mario amiibo will grant you access to a special power-Up: White Cat Mario. This grants you access to every technique of Cat Mario while also making you completely invincible.
The Cat Peach amiibo will also grant you power-ups, though in a different way. When tapped, you’ll receive a power-up at random. This can be helpful if a stage is being particularly tricky or if you just want a chance at a power-up necessary to grab a Green Star or Stamp.
When scanning amiibo of any other Mario series character, you’ll receive a Super Star power-up. All other amiibo will give you a 1-Up Mushroom.
What do amiibo do in Bowser’s Fury?
For anyone heading to Lake Lapcat, you’ll be able to put four amiibo to good use. Among them are the above-mentioned pair. In Bowser’s Fury, the Cat Mario amiibo and Cat Peach amiibo will grant the same rewards when tapped. That means you can make the most of White Cat Mario, and stock up on Power-Ups respectively!
If you have a Bowser amiibo — like the Super Smash Bros. Bowser, Super Mario Bros. Bowser, or Wedding Bowser figure — that’s been begging for some use (or picked up one in a recent restock), you’ll have two more unique functions thanks to the Bowser amiibo and Bowser Jr. amiibo.
Tapping a Bowser amiibo (from the Super Smash Bros. series, Super Mario Bros. series, or Super Mario Odyssey series) will summon Fury Bowser, bringing his wrath upon you. That sounds a little counterintuitive for a Cat Shine hunt, but if you want to experience this adventure’s namesake it’s likely the quickest way to bring it on.
Tapping the Bowser Jr. amiibo will instead give you a little more offensive power. The bratty “buddy” will fire off a shockwave that’ll take out enemies and trigger blocks. Think of it as a POW Block you can access on demand!
Just like in the main game, scanning amiibo of any other Mario series character will get you a Super Star power-up. All other amiibo will give you a 1-Up Mushroom.
