Ahead of the launch of its new Joy-Con models with replaceable batteries, Nintendo of Europe was uploaded some support articles to its website that outlines how users can swap the batteries in their controllers. Available for both the Left Joy-Con and Right Joy-Con, it gives us our first look at the interiors of these redesigned controllers and how difficult it will be to swap batteries. Spoiler alert, it’s pretty simple.
One new detail this article reveals is that Nintendo will be providing a “battery replacement kit” for the Joy-Con when these models hit shelves. The kit will include a new battery, a specifically designed screwdriver, plastic tweezers, a plastic spudger to separate the Joy-Con plastic safely, and some double-sided tape to hold the battery in place. It’s really just removing screws, prying the plastic apart, then prying the battery out.

Functionally, the design hasn’t changed very much. The battery is a bit bulkier than the one included in the current Joy-Con, but it doesn’t result in a size different for the controller. A new compartment holds the battery, which is readily accessible once removing the backside of the Joy-Con. It’s fairly straightforward, which is all you could really ask for when replacing a battery. The way modern gamepads are designed, getting to the battery is such a hassle and sometimes requires desoldering that it’s far easier to buy a new one than potentially ruin your controller.
When will Nintendo of Europe’s new Joy-Con release?
There still isn’t a firm release date for these controllers, but Nintendo of Europe previously said they would be available in Summer 2026. That should be relatively soon, then.
