After weeks of speculation, Nintendo of Europe has now officially announced that it will be releasing a revision of the Switch 2 that includes a removable battery. Set to roll out to store shelves this summer, the new model is being released in anticipation of changing battery regulations across Europe. Not limited to just the newest console, certain accessories for the Nintendo Switch 2 and even the original Switch will also be released with similar changes.
As Nintendo notes, customers should start seeing products in Summer 2026 starting with the original Joy-Con controllers. It will be followed by the Switch 2 system in Autumn 2026, then the Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller in the winter. In early 2027, N64 and GameCube controllers with replaceable batteries will be available for purchase from Nintendo’s online store (which requires an active Switch Online subscription to buy).
In terms of functionality, there is nothing different about this Switch 2 revision apart from the battery. Nintendo is not updating the hardware specifications or swapping the screen, despite a recent report indicating that certain Switch 2 models sport a display sourced from a different manufacturer. If a Switch 2 OLED or Pro were to release, it would be followed by a much bigger presentation from Nintendo than an update on its website.
