A new model of the Nintendo Switch 2 featuring a removable battery is slated for Europe, so that the system will comply with EU regulations related to batteries and waste.

The European Union announced the EU Batteries Legislation in 2023, which requires electronic products to make their batteries easily removable and replaceable from February 18th, 2027. The regulations are designed to give users the right to repair and make devices less impactful on the environment.

Nintendo announced it will introduce revised versions of “products with model numbers starting with ‘BEE’” – and the Switch 2’s model number is BEE-001.

The “BEE” range also includes the Joy-Con 2 controllers and the Switch 2 Pro Controller, which means that the system’s accessories may also see revisions.

Reports and rumors of a new European Switch 2 model have been circulating for a while, but had not been officially confirmed by Nintendo until now.
