While it’s maybe too early to draw any conclusions, it seems that the recent price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2 is having a rather negative effect on hardware sales in Japan. According to the latest Famitsu weekly hardware and software sales charts, sales of Switch 2 in Japan have dropped 87% week-on-week following the new, higher price point. Ouch.

On May 25th, 2026, the price of the Japanese-only Switch 2 increased from ¥49,980 ($312) to ¥59,980 ($374). It’s actually been a bit over a week since then, but the results don’t lie. In the previous week, Nintendo managed to sell 247,880 units. After the price increase, that dropped to just 31,751. While that still put it at number one with regard to hardware sales, that is a stark drop from the previous success Nintendo was having.

As VGC notes, however, it’s not all gloom and doom. Prior to the announcement of an impending price increase, the Switch 2 was only selling around 45,000 units a week. In the three weeks before said announcement, the console moved 52,058, 44,280, and 45,825 units respectively. The three weeks before the price hike took effect saw a massive surge in sales, likely from people wishing to get the unit before it was too expensive. 31,000 is still lower than before, though, so that isn’t great.

Here is the hardware sales chart for the week of May 25th–May 31st, 2026, in Japan:

  1. Switch 2 – 31,751 (5,865,213)
  2. PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 6,527 (1,302,820)
