Next month sees the debut of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe big Booster Course Pack, packaging past series courses into new cups for your enjoyment. While you can purchase the pack either separately or as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, you may be able to play it without either, as the terms reveal that you can play the new tracks locally and online as long as one person owns the Booster Pack.
This is fairly similar to how Smash Ultimate DLC is implemented, though playing on the same track means you get more out of the shared DLC capabilities than having certain characters locked. While the terms specify this is only for Wave 1 of the DLC at the moment, we can assume it’ll be true for future releases as well. So if you’ve got a buddy to play Mario Kart 8 with and only a little money to go around, this may be a workaround for you.
