March 19th, 1994. On this day in Japan, legendary bounty hunter Samus Aran embarked on one of her most memorable missions to date. Even now 25 years later, the SNES classic Super Metroid ranks high amongst the franchise’s finest, not to mention the greatest and most influential games of our time.
Many of you might remember me gushing about the series at great length a few years back during our Metroid Memories series. Simply put, Super Metroid proved the pinnacle of the 2D action-adventure series, perfecting a lot of the groundwork laid down by its 8-bit predecessors. Its unique take on exploration-based gameplay inspired an entire subgenre of platformers to follow — from multiple beloved games in the Castlevania series to cherished indie darlings like Cave Story, Iconoclasts, and Hollow Knight.
So while you wait for Samus’ return on Switch in the years to come, remember to take today and celebrate her more humble beginnings. Got a SNES Classic? Set your Phazon to stun! Still rockin’ the original cart? Grab an old CRTV and dust that bad boy off! At the very least, give Ridley a good roughhousing in Smash for me. Lord knows that diabolical dragon deserves a good beatdown.
