It looks like puzzle fans won’t be waiting too long for the release of another Layton title following this year’s Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. In a short teaser uploaded to YouTube today, Level-5 has teased a full remake of Professor Layton and the Curious Village for release in 2027. Adopting the more modern 3D style that started with the 3DS title Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, all the cutscenes and puzzles that fans fell in love with have been updated to modern screen resolutions along with some additional voice acting to fill out new scenes. That’s certainly exciting.
I’m still weary of Level-5’s usage of AI, which I hope isn’t a thing here, but this remake does look nice. I don’t know that full remakes of the entire series are necessary, but this does mean that Layton will finally be playable on more than just a DS. This remake, as well as New World of Steam, has been confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. I can’t read the kanji at the end of the trailer, but it seemingly notes that HDR will also be implemented on newer platforms.
I have very fond memories of playing Curious Village the first time 20 years ago. Seeing full FMVs in a DS game blew me away, not to mention I became sucked into the story thanks to a Studio Ghibli-esque art style. The series quickly became a favorite of mine, and while Curious Village maybe sits somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of quality, it’s a lovely little puzzle game that I’ve happily returned to a number of times over the last two decades. I hope the remake does the original justice, not to mention excludes AI.
