A popular US games retailer has confirmed that the upcoming installment in the Call of Duty franchise will be distributed as a code in a box on Nintendo Switch 2.

Video Games Plus revealed on X that Switch 2 owners will not be able to purchase the game in cartridge form.

Standing by its dedication to only distributing physical games, Video Games Plus also declared that it would not be selling the Nintendo version of Infinity Ward’s hotly anticipated shooter.

“The future of physical gaming should concern every physical game fan,” the retailer said.

“And if it’s just a box with a download code inside, VGP won’t be carrying it.

“We believe physical games should actually be physical games. If you want the disc or cartridge, we’ll be here fighting for it.”

Physical ownership of games has been a contentious topic throughout 2026, with Sony announcing that it will end disc production for PlayStation consoles in 2028 to embrace an all-digital future. Grand Theft Auto VI, which is widely touted as the biggest game of the year, is also launching as a digital-only release.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the first game in the series to see a release on a Nintendo platform in 13 years, since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U.

An Open Beta Weekend for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will kick off on August 28th. It will feature a campaign mission, various modes, a wide range of weapons, and a suite of different maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 23rd, 2026. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version will begin on August 26th.
