In a move that is sure to aggravate a bunch of people, Nintendo of Korea has announced that the expansion pass for Pokémon Pokopia will be getting a boxed release in the region. The catch? It’s a code in a box, although I’m not sure how else it could be distributed. Pokopia, itself, is a Game-Key Card release, and so far the only first-party game to have one.

Set to release on September 10th, 2026, for around ₩39,900 (or roughly $29 USD), it does come with a small bonus versus buying the expansion pass straight from the eShop. Players will receive 30 “Rare PokéMetals” as a redemption bonus once they add the expansion pass to their account. The bonus will be sent to the corresponding email address attached to the Nintendo Account used to register the DLC. You’ll then have until August 31st, 2027, to receive this bonus, and any keys associated with the extra materials will expire on September 30th, 2027.

I’m not sure if I understand why Nintendo would be printing a box for this expansion pass, but then having a physical presence in stores allows Nintendo to pique the interest of shoppers. Some people also like collecting boxes for things, though I imagine they would prefer games being on physical cartridges if they’re going this route. It’s definitely a lost cause for Pokémon Pokopia, though now I wonder why Nintendo wouldn’t sell an “Ultimate Edition” Game-Key Card that grants you everything.
