After broadcasting a release date reveal trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Square Enix followed up with another lengthy showcase for the upcoming action RPG in Sony’s latest State of Play presentation.
Running for almost ten minutes, the video goes over the deep combat and exploration mechanics players can expect in the VII Remake trilogy’s final installment.
Ruby Weapon and Piko the Chocobo
The video opens with the main cast, led by Cid, diving from the Highwind airship with parachutes and landing before the gigantic Ruby Weapon monster.
The characters can ride on Piko, a reliable Chocobo steed, and zip through the air with its Air Dash ability. Piko can also be used in combat, and players can dismount at any time during a fight to switch to the traditional combat style.
“As you grow stronger, Piko will too,” the narrator explains.
FITS and Synergy systems
Introduced in the previous “Gameplay Introduction” trailer, Revelations has a new combat system called Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS). Alongside the characters’ equipment and Materia, FITS adds another layer to play style customization with new outfits imbued with unique movesets.
The new trailer elaborates on how FITS works by revealing that there are four FITS to choose from: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner.
Vincent’s Summoner allows him to perform deadlier standard attacks as well as synergized moves with his Galian Beast transformation, while Cid’s Knight role focuses on defense, safeguarding allies, and drawing enemy attention.
The narrator also confirms that the Synergy system — introduced in the previous installment, Rebirth — has been expanded in Revelation, with the video showing Cid and Yuffie teaming up for a new collaborative attack.
Highwind navigation
Access to the Highwind is provided early in the game, allowing players the freedom to seamlessly travel wherever and whenever.
“The Highwind isn’t just a means of transportation,” the narrator explains.
“It also functions as your base of operations, and will subtly change over the course of your adventures.”
Players can also switch between any character at any time.
Wutai and grappling gun
Wutai is a warrior nation that the player can visit in Revelation. It is home to a large number of cats.
“This area has a unique aesthetic and culture that stands out from the rest of the world, and its people take pride in that,” the narrator explains.
“However, tensions between Wutai and Shinra are at a fever pitch. Even so, the threat of war isn’t enough to dampen the people’s spirits.”
It’s in this location that we also see the game’s new grappling gun in use, with Yuffie speedily zipping across rooftops. With this mechanic, the footage shows how the player can go from the ground to the highest place in Wutai within moments.
New areas and features
In addition to Wutai, Revelation introduces other new areas, such as Rocket Town. After visiting a location, players will unlock it as a fast-travel point.
Sidequests return, with players able to take on requests from various people. These optional missions will change depending on which character takes the lead, altering the story and gameplay. Cutscenes now also feature a fast-forward option.
Queen’s Blood
Queen’s Blood is a strategic card game in which two players compete for control of the board in a bid to earn the most points. Matches can change drastically depending on card placement and abilities.
“While easy to pick up and play, the deeper you dive into this game, the more you’ll come to understand its strategic depth,” the narrator says.
Red XIII, in particular, will find himself in a Queen’s Blood-based adventure where he will encounter “powerful opponents with unique abilities.”
