The LEGO Group has explained why there are no human characters – such as Ash, Misty, or Brock – in its LEGO Pokémon range.
Design director Siddharth Muthyala told Polygon that LEGO came to the decision after consulting young fans.
“Every time we speak with children and fans, what they want to be are Pokémon Trainers,” Muthyala said.
“And then when you dive a little deeper into that, what does it mean to be a Trainer? It’s finding Pokémon, catching them, nurturing them, training them, and of course, you go into a battle with them.
“The intentionality goes so deep that we don’t have any minifigures in the assortment because children are the Trainers.”
12 new LEGO Pokémon sets were announced this week, featuring plenty of fan favorites such as Pikachu, Charizard, Gengar, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, and more. All sets are compatible with LEGO’s SMART Play feature, an interactive system designed to bring builds to life through sounds, lights, and reactive elements.
