This is a big one. Nintendo took it upon itself last night to significantly increase the mileage of the Game Boy NSO library by adding two of its best hits. Donkey Kong ‘94 and Mario’s Picross are the latest additions to the service.

Personally, I couldn’t be more thrilled. If you’ve never played either title, they’re great puzzle games with different approaches. DK ‘94 is effectively Mario Vs. Donkey Kong’s puzzle platformer precursor and even begins with you beating the original Donkey Kong up to the 100m level. After that, the real game begins and a map of original levels opens up to you.

Mario’s Picross is probably my favorite of the two added games, but that’s because I’m a huge Picross head. Picross gives you a blank grid with vertical and horizontal columns, giving you numbers that indicate which blocks you should fill in on the grid. Doing so correctly reveals a picture. Getting to that point can be tricky but Mario’s Picross leads you in perfectly with an optional tutorial and an ‘Easy Picross’ mode that precedes the standard ‘Picross’ puzzles.

The best part is if you end up liking either of these titles, the Nintendo Switch library has modern iterations of both. Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and the Picross S series can be found on the Nintendo eShop and play more or less like their Game Boy ancestors.

The Game Boy NSO update that adds Donkey Kong ‘94 and Mario’s Picross is available now.
