When it comes to virtual consoles, the Nintendo Switch has a quite impressive library thanks to Nintendo Switch Online. Of course, there’s still quite a wide array of older titles available on the system outside of that, such as Sega Genesis Classics. This collection was announced for Switch in late 2018, long before the Sega Genesis joined the NSO library via the Expansion Pack. Despite all of the history behind it, Sega has just revealed that the bundle will be leaving virtual stores early next month, eShop included.
The collection is officially set to be delisted on December 6th, 2024 — just under a month away. The FAQ on the matter thankfully clarifies that those who already own the game will still be able to play it. Even if it isn’t currently downloaded, so long as it is in your library it will be able to be redownloaded and played at any time. In addition, there is of course the Sega Genesis Nintendo Switch Online app as mentioned prior, which features many of the same games for those with the Expansion Pack.
Why is Sega Genesis Classics leaving the eShop?
As of now it is unclear why exactly Sega Genesis Classics is being delisted in the first place. No reason was officially given, so it’s hard to do anything but wonder. That being said, the bundle can still be purchased between now and the final date, so if you have a soft spot for these games and don’t have the Expansion Pack, you may want to consider picking it up.
