Two weeks ago it was revealed that the next wave of icons available via Nintendo Switch Online would be themed around the Mother series, in celebration of all three games being available on the Switch in Japan. The schedule for the icons was published on the Japanese Nintendo website and clarified that icons from the three games would run for one week each. At the time it was unclear if the Mother 3 icons would be available outside of Japan, and despite the hopes of many fans, it was once again another letdown.
Yesterday was the final day of the EarthBound icons, and at 6 p.m. PST, fans eagerly waited to see if the Mother 3 icons would be available after all. Of course, they were not, and much like the actual game itself, are completely unavailable outside of Japan. While it is technically possible to obtain them by changing the region of your Nintendo account back and forth, doing so causes the Nintendo Switch Online icon maker to stop functioning and completely drains your eShop balance, so it isn’t worth it for most people.
Mother 3 fans, unfortunately, have to be used to being snubbed time and again, and this is no different. It’s pretty disheartening to hope for a localization when Nintendo won’t even allow the West to have pictures of the characters. As sad as this all is though, there’s not anything anyone can do about it. At the end of the day, it may just be best to enjoy the game through the fan translation, official merchandise, and the community surrounding it.
