When a logo leaked for Star Ocean: The Second Story R, many assumed it’d be a simple port of the PSP remake with a few extra bells and whistles. Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct confirmed it was anything but simple, overhauling the PlayStation classic with a new graphical style while retaining core elements.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is often regarded as the best in the series by fans and this remake will not only feature a new 2.5D style which blends sprites with 3D environments but also revamp the battle system and add extra features. The entire soundtrack has been rearranged by original composer Motoi Sakuraba, too, who will also be providing some new, fully orchestrated tracks for the game.
