Rumor, speculation ahead. (Sorry in advance.)
I get it, okay. I’m as sick of this circus as you are. We all know how it goes at this point. Some sort of datamine or insider info comes out — in this case, a Nvidia leak for “nvn2” which seems to be a graphics API — that implies, suggests, or in any way hints at the possibility that a Switch Pro (or a console successor/“Switch 2”) will be coming. And then we, the game journalist intelligentsia, report on it with big flashy headlines in an unending echo until we’re all tired of it. While we thought Nintendo had quashed the rumors with the release of the Switch OLED last October and a fairly definitive note that there was no strictly more powerful console coming, much like people somehow still speculating that Nintendo Directs will have Smash Ultimate DLC stingers, you cannot kill this idea.

What are we supposed to do? We’re a Nintendo news outlet, do you think we’re just supposed to ignore this kind of thing until an official announcement? Yeah, we’re looking at a crumb and speculating what cookie it could possibly come from (when there’s always the possibility said crumb came from a cake or pie instead), but that crumb inevitably came from some kind of delicious dessert, and we want to know what! Oh, who am I kidding? Half the folks who share this article won’t read past the headline before seeing white. While I personally think it’s more likely at this point that Nintendo is gearing up for its next console (the Switch is on the cusp of turning a whole five years old), who knows but the suits and engineers working on the thing? I don’t know, man. I got enough video games to worry about this year already. Like have y’all seen Kirby’s next game? That matters way more to me in the immediate future than worrying about how many terraflops the Switch Professional DX & Knuckles (Not Clickbait) (Okay, Maybe Clickbait) will have.
Will there be a Switch Pro? Who the heck knows? It seems nothing will stop people from whispering about Nintendo’s next hardware release. So until the undetermined point where they actually do say something, I’m just gonna rewatch the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 trailer for the fourth time and get excited about the fact that I will tangibly have it in my hands in six months’ time. Ciao.
