Pokémon Trainers traversing the Paldea region in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will have countless tools to help them on their journey. Of course, a little help here and there with gifts is always nice. Luckily, the Mystery Gift feature that has become the series’ primary wary for sending out items and Pokémon is still here in Generation 9. Once unlocked, Trainers can stockpile their bags with Poké Balls, Sandwich Ingredients, and more, along with special Pokémon to commemorate events.

Here with our Mystery Gift guide, you can look up what codes are active for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as well as how to access this feature.

What is a Mystery Gift?

Introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, the Mystery Gift feature has evolved over the years. Initially used to give players decorations and items between copies of Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon Stadium 2, and Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS (a handheld virtual pet toy device, similar to a Tamagotchi), it is now an online gift distribution feature. The Pokémon Company will gift Trainers with free in-game items and Pokémon via early purchase bonuses, code promotions, and more. Some giveaways require codes, which are released by The Pokémon Company online via social media, free crossover promotions with retail stores (i.e.: GameStop in the United States), or pre-order incentives at specific retailers (i.e.: Pokémon Center’s online store for North America).

For Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Mystery Gift rewards tend to be Sandwich Ingredients, Tera Shards, Pokémon, or other in-game items (like Poké Balls, Berries, and more).

How do I unlock the Mystery Gift feature in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Mystery Gift is activated when Trainers reach the first Pokémon Center in Paladea (this will be the Los Platos Pokémon Center). Time estimates for this are about 90 minutes according to The Pokémon Company, yet can be done quicker if the player doesn’t explore “too much” during the game’s “tutorial.”

Once unlocked, you’ll find the feature in the game’s menu (press the X-button) under Poké Portal. Once selected, you’ll go to the Poké Portal’s menu list, including the Mystery Gift option at the bottom.

How do I redeem a Mystery Gift code/promotion?

There are two ways to redeem Mystery Gift promotions in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet – via the Internet and with Code/Password. Both require an internet connection.

  • Get via Internet: A promotion distributed by The Pokémon Company where no code is required. Typically these include early purchase bonuses (i.e.: Flying Tera Type Pikachu).
  • Get with Code/Password: Where a code that is no longer than 16 characters can be entered and redeemed. These codes can vary from generic, free for all to use (before expiration date) to a one-time use, unique code.

Special, in-person Pokémon events may also distribute a special event Pokémon. In that case, the Local Communication function is used instead. That feature is not implemented in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, yet.

Can I check if I redeemed a code or promotion already?

Yes. Within the Poké Portal –> Mystery Gift menu, there will be an option titled “Check Mystery Gifts.” This will give you a redemption history for the current save file of Pokémon Scarlet OR Violet you’re playing.
