Nintendo has unveiled a first look at its upcoming new Kyoto-based development center. Now called the “Technology Development Center,” the building is a 10-story structure with familiar Nintendo architecture that rests next to the company’s HQ building. Set to be completed around March 2029, the building will serve as the new head of research and development for Nintendo and host a number of offices, development servers, and “infrastructure required for future” R&D.

Comprising 6,084 square meters with a total floor area of 49,305.87 square meters, it’s certainly a large structure. There is one basement level and a total of nine regular floors, with the basement likely serving as storage for servers and the like. While Nintendo doesn’t develop games on the same scale as Western triple-A companies, a new building like this will allow The Big N to expand its operations for generations to come.
“Through the construction of the Technology Development Center and further investment in research and development,” the company writes, “Nintendo will continue to create more reasons for consumers to choose Nintendo for unique, family-friendly entertainment, while striving to deliver Nintendo’s unique and original entertainment to everyone around the world.”
For some background, Nintendo acquired the land for this building from the city of Kyoto on April 12, 2022. The city was taking proposals for new developments starting on December 8, 2021, of which Nintendo was eventually selected as owner of the site. Construction began shortly after, with a Nikkei report from August 2023 stating that Nintendo was expecting long-term increase of staff and would look at adding more floors to the building. That’s the likely reason why it won’t be fully operational until 2029.
