In an interview with Pocket Tactics this past weekend, members from prominent porting studio Virtuous indicated that they would love to bring Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption II and Grand Theft Auto 5 to the Nintendo Switch. While more recently known for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Virtuous previously ported L.A. Noire, XCOM 2, and The Outer Worlds to the original Switch. The majority of the interview is about the work done on L.A. Noire, but eventually technical director Andy Fong notes how much the team would love to port Rockstar’s other classics.

“[The] team is eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch,” Fong tells the outlet. “We’re personally big fans and believe these games can shine again on the Switch, delighting even more players.” Nothing has been set in stone, but I could see Rockstar being game for this. We don’t know if Grand Theft Auto 6 will even launch on Nintendo’s latest console, but a port of the previous game would be a good way to placate Nintendo fans. Virtuous is also working on porting Oblivion Remastered to Switch 2, so it has some technical knowhow of the current console.

While it might seem a bit ambitious to bring such a big game to Nintendo’s older console, Grand Theft Auto 5 originally released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013. Those devices are much weaker than Nintendo’s first hybrid device, even if the architecture is vastly different (and sort of incomparable). Still, I could see the game running on the original Switch. Red Dead Redemption 2 might require the additional power of the Switch 2, however.
