It was only a matter of time before the Switch 2 was jailbroken, though I didn’t expect it to happen a little over a year after the console’s release. On Twitter yesterday, user pepsipu posted a clip of a modded version of Mario Kart World and announced, “I jailbroke the Nintendo Switch 2.” I guess he was really dying to drive around the Mushroom Kingdom as Cinnamoroll, because so far that’s about the extent of what he’s accomplished with this.

Pepsipu admits that they used OpenAI to discover this exploit, which likely wouldn’t have been possible this quickly otherwise. The process for getting this jailbreak working is a bit complicated, and involves having a Switch 1, Switch 2, and PC. You need to have the SmileBASIC 4.4.9 Switch application, a PC on the same local networking running Node.js 22+, and 20 MB of save data from the SmileBASIC application. It’s not a permanent jailbreak, requiring the user to perform the same steps each time, but it’s a start.

I wouldn’t personally advise performing this jailbreak just yet, but if you’re so inclined, you can find a step-by-step process on pepsipu’s blog. Being that this is a software level exploit, Nintendo is likely to patch the security flaw soon. It doesn’t seem like this will lead to piracy in the short term, though obviously long-term implications can vary. At any rate, I’m a little stunned people have figured this out already.
