If your Nintendo Switch 2 is running low on storage thanks to all the Game-Key Card titles you’ve been buying, you may want to clear up some room for Final Fantasy VII Revelation. In an interview with VGC following a recent hands-on preview, Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi hinted at how big the trilogy closer would be when it comes to install size. Not content to let Call of Duty steal his thunder, Hamaguchi said, “it’s probably going to be around 200GB.”
While the interview covers a lot more than install size, at one point VGC brings up recent confirmation that all physical versions of Revelation would require a download to install. Asking if the game is bigger than the two discs that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shipped with on PlayStation 5, Hamaguchi said, “In a word, yes. Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game. I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”
Hamaguchi then notes how he really wanted to do some kind of physical release, especially since discs seem to be dying out. Still, there is an advantage for developers of shipping purely digital, which Hamaguchi explains as, “With a full disc release, three months before, you have all these performance checks, and you really need to schedule things out. To give you an extreme example, for a download-only version, you can literally fix the game up until the day of release, so if there’s a huge issue, you can fix it before release.”

I’m not quite sure if that adds up, but Hamaguchi expresses that, “I’m not saying, ‘you have to believe me and it’s my way or the highway’ or anything like that: this is strictly one of the benefits, speaking as a developer.” That’s understandable, but then I would argue that you could delay a physical release to ensure the full game is available on it. People who are opting for physical want to retain ownership when servers inevitably close down. To them, it doesn’t matter if they are playing day-one with everyone else, or they may even opt to buy the game twice so they can experience it immediately and then preserve it for later with the disc.
