In the same week that gifted us a treasure trove of past E3 material, some random internet heroes have uploaded a rare Pokémon Diamond and Pearl “Making Of” DVD to the Internet Archive for fans to browse. Never released publicly, this DVD chronicles the two-year-long development of the first DS entries and includes a metric ton of beta designs and scrapped Pokémon concepts.
A rather long video by Lewtwo, one of the people responsible for discovering the DVD, is available on YouTube which covers a ton of information. With help from Pokémon community member Neos, the duo have created an online archive you can browse and even provided an ISO if you wish to download the DVD. As the video notes, there are at least 120 different beta designs that did not wind up in the final games.
The documentary, itself, it only 43 minutes long and is entirely in Japanese. I would imagine that someone will provide subtitles in the coming weeks, but for now, at least it has been preserved for everyone to watch. It’s rare we get to even see stuff like this from a Nintendo franchise, so I’m happy the curtain is being pulled back a bit.
