While speaking to press in Japan this morning, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the company will be making preparations to combat resellers for the upcoming launch of the Switch 2. In the first press conference Nintendo has held since the announcement of the Switch successor, Furukawa was asked about how Nintendo plans to combat the stock shortages that the original device suffered from, a phenomenon made worse by scalpers looking to resell the devices. In response, Furukawa said that Nintendo had made preparations based on past experiences and was planning to have enough stock for the Switch 2 launch.

“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date,” Furukawa said. “We are making preparations.” As reported by Nikkei (and translated by VGC), Nintendo initially planned to launch the Switch 2 in late 2024, but the company decided against that specifically to ensure it had enough stock. As the report reads, “priority was given to ensure initial inventory of the successor console and a line-up of software titles at the time of its launch.” In essence, that should help alleviate the shortages the original Switch faced for months after its global release.

This is likely going to be a wise decision as initial reports from various research firms predict that the Switch 2 will sell like hotcakes this year. Research firm Circana has predicted that the device will move over four million units in just 2025, and DFC Intelligence claims the console will sell over 80 million by the end of 2028, which is ludicrously higher than what the first console sold in its first three years. Toyo Securities analyst Yasuda Hideki stated to Nikkei that he believes the Switch 2 will exceed six million units in its first three months, which is kind of absurd to think about.

At any rate, the current Switch is at an astounding 150.86 million units sold so far and has been far and away Nintendo’s most successful home console. While it might not be able to dethrone the almighty PS2, the fact that people are this hungry for a Switch 2 could suggest that we’re in for another monster of a sales juggernaut.
