As of this morning, on December 18th, it is being reported by Mat Piscatella at Circana that the Nintendo Switch’s US sales figures have overtaken Sony’s PlayStation 2. This puts Switch at 46.6 million units sold in the US.

It’s been no secret that Nintendo Switch has been a gargantuan success for Nintendo, having sold in nearly eight years what it took Sony’s PlayStation 2 to do in 24 years. This comes after Jim Ryan’s report from November that the PlayStation 2 has sold 160 million units worldwide, making it, in worldwide sales, the best-selling video game hardware of all time. This leaves the Nintendo Switch at over 146 million units sold worldwide, making it the 3rd best selling console of all-time.

The number one game console as of December 2024

Nintendo Switch is now only behind the Nintendo DS as having the highest units sold in the US across all video game hardware platforms. The Nintendo DS itself is 20 years old this year and in the US has sold a total of 53.80 million units in its lifetime.

Whether Nintendo Switch will surpass Sony’s PlayStation 2 in worldwide sales and become the highest selling video game hardware of all time remains to be seen. However, its consumer spending figures were down 3% compared to last November in 2023. All signs point to Nintendo’s target audience preparing for the rollout of Nintendo Switch’s successor in 2025 which will likely continue to affect the Nintendo Switch’s sales decline.
