Over the last decade, Capcom has been remaking the mainline Resident Evil games in an effort to both modernize fan-favorite titles and correct some of the series lore to better fit in with newer games. It has been tremendously successful, with both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 selling better than their original releases and helping boost the sales of Resident Evil Requiem to dazzling heights. The thing is: what happens when the remakes catch up to the main series? Code Veronica is getting remade as Resident Evil: Veronica next year, which will leave just leave 0, 5, and 6 (with hints pointing towards the first game getting another remake).

Don’t worry – Capcom reportedly has a plan in place for this.

In a recently released Biohazard 30th Anniversary magazine in Japan, RE series producer Jun Takeuchi said, “The current Resident Evil series is being developed along two tracks. Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since around Resident Evil Village. The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in Requiem, are also in preparation for a ‘crossover.’”

He notes that the initial plan was to add callbacks as a means of fan service, but fan reception to the inclusion of Umbrella in Resident Evil 7 was better than expected. That then made 7 a “turning point” for the series, of which Capcom started to base its new games and remakes on a similar design ethos to synergize everything. He also states that by doing remakes, it has given the new games different ideas to bounce off of, resulting in newer mechanics or diversions.

There’s no word on how, exactly, Capcom will tackle these remakes or if even 7, Village, and Requiem will eventually be remade, but Capcom supposedly knows what it’s doing.
