In a rather lengthy interview on VGC with Sega’s VP of Global Transmedia Group, Justin Scarpone, it was revealed that the company is currently developing a new Virtua Fighter title. After having brought the brand back to mainstream awareness with Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown in 2021, it seems as if Sega wants to keep the momentum going with its legacy brands by releasing a proper sequel to its fighting franchise. This will be in addition to the new installments of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi announced last year.
“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket,” Scarpone told the publication. “…and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed.” He then explains how Sega’s push into live-action films and animated series is part of a broader plan to raise awareness of Sega’s franchises so that new games can resonate with audiences both young and old. It tracks, too, as younger generations likely have no idea what Shinobi even is.

What can we expect from the new Virtua Fighter game?
As for what this Virtua Fighter will look like, be it a traditional 1-on-1 fighter or some kind of adventure game, is uncertain. Scarpone doesn’t offer any additional details and Sega hasn’t even officially announced the game. With last year’s Video Game Awards being the event that Sega unveiled all of its new “classic” games, we may have to wait another month before getting any concrete information. Even so, just the fact that Virtua Fighter isn’t totally dead is a reason to rejoice.
