Birthdays can mean a lot of things for people – time with friends or family, treating yourself to something special, or just disconnecting from responsibilities.

For Kirby it means cake, cake, and more cake.

Yes, April 27th marks Kirby’s 32nd birthday and the anniversary of the original Kirby’s Dream Land! This milestone may not have the same kind of universal reach of a Mario or Pokémon based celebration but there’s no denying the impact Kirby has had on Nintendo fans and games as a whole.

Speaking personally, my love of games started with the accessible but addictive nature of Kirby games, which I imagine is an experience many share; and the growth of the series runs parallel with Masahiro Sakurai’s rise within the industry as a director, with Kirby sensibilities and DNA running throughout Super Smash Bros. HAL Laboratory has continued to make these games with a new generation of developers and creators, not to mention the rise of Kirby as a titan of merchandising.

There’s so much more I could say about these games and this character, but I think we’ll end on something as simple as him – Happy Birthday, Kirby!

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
