Go back in your mind to the early days of gaming. The year is 1982, Mario isn’t a household name yet, Pac-Man is taking over arcades, and you’re headed to the store to check out what’s new in the Atari library. Odds are if you were an avid video game fan at the time, you’re probably at least somewhat familiar with Yars’ Revenge. This classic was Atari’s best-selling original title for the 2600, totaling around 780,000 units shipped. Despite the passage of time, the Yars series is still going strong, with a new entry having been revealed today!

The announcement comes from Nintendo’s Indie World presentation this morning. The game is being developed by WayForward Technologies, who also worked on titles such as Shantae, River City Girls, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. Unlike Yars: Recharged, the most recent game in the series prior, Yars Rising appears to be a complete reboot for the series, featuring gameplay more akin to a Metroidvania.

As of now the official release date has not yet been announced; the Atari website simply says it is coming soon. It will be available on a wide variety of platforms including PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Atari VCS. If you’re looking forward to seeing what this classic game reimagined will look like, keep an eye out for more news and a final release date.
