The British Academy of Film and Television Arts recently opened up a poll for the Most Iconic Video Game Character of All Time. All in all over 4000 votes were counted, and the results will most likely surprise you.

Coming in on top is Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, beating out Mario who snagged the number 2 spot. This is sure to spark a lot of debate but at the same time it’s worth considering how much of a British insitution Lara Croft is – not only is the character herself English but she was created by the Derby-based studio Core Design.

A bit more confusing are the later picks in the list, with Hitman’s Agent 47 besting Sonic the Hedgehog and Baldur’s Gate 3’s Shadowheart being above Pikachu. Naturally as a fan vote of a relatively small sample size it’s not worth taking too seriously – just have fun with it!
