Last night, Nintendo released their Q4 earnings report, along with a plethora of sales data. Within this extensive dataset, nestled among the top performers of 2023, including Tears of the Kingdom and Nintendo Switch Sports, stood one of my all-time favorite RPGs: Super Mario RPG. Surpassing 3 million global sales in less than a year; an achievement that is nothing short of remarkable.

To put this figure into perspective, consider the following: the original SNES title, throughout its entire lifespan, garnered just over 2 million sales globally. While it’s true that the Nintendo Switch boasts a significantly larger user base compared to the SNES/Super Famicom era, achieving this milestone in just six weeks is a massive success for Nintendo.
Let’s hope the tremendous success of the Mario RPG Remake will encourage Nintendo to explore similar opportunities for other beloved SNES RPGs… (cough cough Earthbound cough).
