With Nintendo Direct season on the horizon, many fans are eagerly waiting to find out what 2024 has in store for them. While no one can know for sure what will be announced in the coming months, speculation around GameCube content is once again on the rise following a patent in the UK for the infamous GameCube controller. Initially shown off in a Tweet by Jo Reggelt, the patents seem to be for two full GameCube controller designs, as well as a separate one for the button interface on the right side.

What are the GameCube controller trademarks for?

While it is uncertain as of now, the most obvious thought as to the reason behind these new patents would be for a GameCube emulation service coming to Nintendo Switch Online soon. This is possibly supported as well by the fact that the icons in the patent resemble the other icons used for the controllers made for other Nintendo Switch Online emulators. That being said, Nintendo has made statements in the past suggesting that they were not intending on adding the GameCube library to Nintendo Switch Online, so it’s hard to say for sure.

Perhaps a simpler explanation is just that Nintendo is planning on creating an official wireless GameCube controller. While there have long been Nintendo-endorsed wireless GameCube controllers for the Nintendo Switch, there hasn’t been one officially made by Nintendo themselves on the market. Given the number of GameCube titles being ported or remade in recent years such as Pikmin 1 & 2 and Metroid Prime Remastered plus the controller’s compatibility with Super Smash Bros., it could just be that Nintendo has decided it would be a good time to release a general GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch.

As exciting as this all is, it’s important to remember that all of this is still speculation. People have been theorizing about GameCube content since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, and history says don’t get too excited. Until we hear anything official, no one can know for sure if any of these ideas hold water or not. We’re certainly hoping something comes of this though!
