Celeste developer Maddy Makes Games is celebrating the sixth anniversary of its seminal indie platformer in incredible fashion. Instead of simply an update or some new key art, the team announced via the official Celeste Twitter account that players can now download and play Celeste 64, a free bite-sized title that reimagines the original as if it was developed for Nintendo’s 64-bit console.

Available through the developer’s website, Celeste 64 is a meager 28 MB download that provides roughly an hour of content to play through. Much like the original game, players will be tasked with collecting strawberries and scaling Celeste Mountain. This isn’t a recap of the story, but sort of a side project that lets both veterans and newcomers see Celeste in a new light.

Race to the finish

I LOVE the 64 era graphics!

As stated on the developer’s webpage, Celeste 64 was created in about a week. At present, it’s only available for PC and Linux, but a MacOS port is in the works. Bugs are also being ironed out so that players can have the smoothest experience possible. Considering this is a free bonus experience, I think some bugs are perfectly acceptable.

If you’re thinking of running this on actual N64 hardware, that sadly isn’t possible. Noel Berry, one of the programmers for Celeste and this new version, stated that 64 would require a pretty substantial port to get working. Some fans might be up to the task, but either way, Celeste 64 is a pretty amazing way to celebrate the original modern classic.
