Last week, Jiro Mifune, a developer who worked on the original Live A Live and later Chrono Trigger, shared that he had a hand in brainstorming ideas for the original Super Mario RPG. Mifune was uncomfortable with the idea of Mario wielding a sword and armor, so he drew up what the characters could look like if Super Mario RPG had a Three Musketeers motif.
I felt uncomfortable with Mario wearing a sword and armor, which was the template for RPGs at the time, so I drew the original idea of #SuperMarioRPG with "Three Musketeers" as the motif.I drew this artwork from there.#スーパーマリオRPG pic.twitter.com/TE1UwZ9H3J

The art he shared last week was just a small taste, it appears, as he has shared more than a handful of new images of characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, and even Wario dressed in Three Musketeers-inspired outfits. The artwork is nothing short of stunning, and while Super Mario RPG ended up pivoting away from this theme and doing just fine, it’s a shame we never got to see more of these designs.
Today, I will upload the contents of the #SuperMarioRPG proposal of "Three Musketeers Motif" which I drew. #スーパーマリオRPG https://t.co/3JuEmc9Omf
