Mario Kart Tour is getting one last Anniversary Tour before it closes down in two weeks

It’s weird to live in a world where a mobile game is getting a semi-major update right before it closes down, but that is just the case when it comes to Mario Kart Tour. With only two weeks left before the app is taken offline on September 30, 2026, Nintendo is running a special “Anniversary Tour” for its ill-fated mobile Mario Kart. As you would expect, this last hoorah includes a chance to nab some skins, karts, and characters you may be missing. I’m not sure what the point of that is considering an offline version has not been announced, but completionists may want a sense of finality before things wrap up.

Nintendo also revealed some final stats for the game that highlight how much content it has gotten and which characters players stuck with. Since launching in 2019, Mario Kart Tour managed to rack up 202 playable characters. 65 Mii Racing Suits were added to the game, which now makes me wonder why Mario Kart World doesn’t have a much broader means of customization. The most used Mii Racing Suit was the “? Block,” and most played character was Bowser. Mario wound up at number five, haha.

 

 

There isn’t much else to say about Mario Kart Tour after all this time. The app became one of the most downloaded games of 2019, but it was never met with much positivity. It’s nice that Nintendo would later incorporate unique levels into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via its Course Pass DLC, so at least a majority of its content won’t be lost. Still, I have to wonder why Nintendo went so hard into mobile gaming for a short period only to completely abandon it a year or two later.
