Sales projections from the past couple months seemed to show it, but now we know for certain – the Nintendo Switch is officially the third best-selling console of all-time, with 122.55 million units sold by the end of 2022, as reported by Nintendo itself. That means it’s surpassed both the Game Boy’s 118.69 million and the PS4’s 117.03 million marks. Also, the console’s 994.30 million units sold are better than any other Nintendo console’s, and guaranteed to cross the 1 billion threshold by the end of 2023.

In addition to hardware numbers, the software performances of the Switch’s top titles continues to dazzle: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 52 million units, Animal Crossing New Horizons with 41.59 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crossing the 30 mil mark with 30.52 million. New title(s) Pokémon Scarlet and Violet debuted with over 20 million for just its first 1.5 months on the market, and is likely to catapult past its predecessor(s) Sword & Shield within a year or two. With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom due out in May and other big titles this year, the Switch’s momentum is sure to keep strong. And we’ll be sure to report on more thrilling sales metrics as they come.
