Closing out today’s Nintendo Direct (so long as you don’t count a little game called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom) was a most welcome surprise. Another Kirby game is on the way to Switch, and it’s one fans will be all too familiar with. It’s the game that effectively defined a whole era of the pink puffball’s history, and was at the time a culmination of several attempts at a fresh Pop Star platformer.

Now, it’s back, as Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe!

Multiplayer is once again a key draw for this one. Players are able to join up as Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, and King Dedede to help the cosmic wizard Magolor, who is definitely not trying to trick you at all. It won’t be exactly the same game either, as at least one brand-new copy ability is being added — Mecha! Kirby will effectively don a mobile suit, giving him impressive armor and artillery. Whether or not more (perhaps Fighters 2’s Wrestler?) get added remains to be seen, but RtDL already held an impressive amount of abilities.

The other, known expansion comes to sub-games. A handful are being added, including ones that are takes on older sub-games from the series, like Samurai Kirby from Super Star. All of this continues the celebration of Kirby’s 30th Anniversary, and will be a nice return to the familiar after Kirby and the Forgotten Land brought on its new direction to the series.

Look forward to an intergalactic adventure full of trademark Kirby charm when Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe comes to Nintendo Switch on February 24th, 2023.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
