Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was one of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack titles I was anticipating the most. Who wouldn’t want to revisit this take on Pop Star and some surrounding planets, melding copy abilities and collecting Crystals the whole way through? Unfortunately for players, things weren’t quite as they remembered, with a troublesome and game-breaking bug making its presence known shortly after release.
The bug in question affected players when Kirby would take certain attacks or sources of damage while underwater. As the game’s third world features lengthy sub-surface sections, that’s beyond problematic unless you’re avoiding hits the whole way through. Of note is the Aqua Star (the world in question) boss Acro, which takes place entirely underwater.
A bug has been found in #Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online that can prevent players from progressing under a certain condition. A patch will be released early next week to fix this. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Nintendo is presumably aware of this, as they’ve made a statement and commitment to patching the Switch Online title by next week. While they don’t go into specifics, this being the most apparent issue makes it likely it’s the fix in question.
In the meantime, swim carefully and keep enjoying this semi-3D delight from Kirby’s 30 year history.
