The River City/Kunio-kun series has been around for decades, with WayForward making modern splashes for the brand thanks to River City Girls. With a sequel on the way there’re already more beatdowns to look forward to, but this latest appearance from Misako and Kyoko is looking back instead.

River City Girls Zero is reviving the previously Japan only Super Famicom title Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka. This was the debut of River City Girls’ leading ladies, and while the gameplay is keeping things classic there are some updates to look forward to. Namely, an animated opening and manga-style cutscenes to better tie to its eventual successor.

River City Girls Zero is due to arrive in early 2022, with pre-orders for its physical edition opening January 28th.
