Hades has undoubtedly left its mark on gaming as it nears its first anniversary, gathering up dozens of 2020 game of the year awards (including our own) and striking again with its launch on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms earlier this month. Rather than bask in its present, a new developer video takes a look at the Greek mythological figures that inspired the creators of the rogue-like.

Writer and Creative Director Greg Kasavin takes us on a tour on just some of the underworld’s denizens, giving insight on what specifically inspired their depictions within the context of Hades. Most interesting might be the portion on Zagreus himself, an obscure chthonic god that is now immortalized as Hades’ playable lead.

If you haven’t already, for some unfathomable reason, you owe it to yourself to play Hades. Whether you know nothing of its roots or are an avid scholar of the stories that informed its creators, it’s a game that lives up to their status – legendary.
