Nintendo’s E3 2021 Direct had many surprises in store that fans didn’t see coming, and undoubtedly one of those was the reveal of Mario Party Superstars. The upcoming party title compiles the very best minigames from the original trilogy of Mario Party games on the Nintendo 64, and remasters them in glorious HD. But just what lengths have Nintendo gone to when updating these beloved minigames with modern graphics?

A new video from GameXplain places the upcoming remastered collection side by side with the same minigames from the N64 era, and the difference is very striking. Fuzzy textures are replaced by vibrant patterns, the murky water of old now looks greater than that of real-life tropical paradises, and Bowser’s face looks more beautiful than ever — until players start stretching and manipulating it into a monstrous mess, that is.

With all that said, it will never not be the case that the N64 had very impressive graphics for its time, and those 64-bit graphics still have such a potent charm to them to this day. As much as I’m looking forward to adding Superstars into my multiplayer rotation, sometimes it’s still hard to resist that old-school Mario Party experience!

Mario Party Superstars will launch on Nintendo Switch on October 29th, 2021, and is available to pre-order now on the Nintendo eShop for $59.99.
