Remember how the Nintendo Switch isn’t region-locked, which is a big step forward for gamers around the world? Well, it appears the Tencent Nintendo Switch, the one that’s available to the Chinese market, is taking a step backward: it’s been discovered that Tencent Chinese Nintendo Switch carts will only be playable on those consoles.
You heard that right.
A recent photo of the box art for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was shown with a warning label on the top of the box. While the implications of this aren’t too severe, as there aren’t any China-exclusive titles yet, we will see Rabbids Adventure Party become the first later this year.
PSA for Nintendo Switch owners:
Game cartridges released for the Tencent Nintendo Switch will not work on global Nintendo Switch consoles.
For example, NSMBU Deluxe will be published on Jan 15th by Tencent in China. This cartridge will ONLY work on the Tencent Nintendo Switch. pic.twitter.com/66v7kvN7pI

Ironically, the inverse of this is true: owning a Tencent Switch doesn’t restrict you to China-only games. Those consoles can still play global carts, just without online capabilities.
While this information is peculiar, the idea isn’t too surprising given how Tencent operates.
