Pokémon Sword and Shield are out in the wild and have been datamined, meaning at least one person with the games has been able to look deep in their internal files and reveal information otherwise unknown.
We’ve compiled everything we’ve found so far in one handy place, but be warned: there are massive spoilers ahead. If you want to go into Pokémon Sword and Shield completely fresh, do not keep reading!
I repeat: There are MASSIVE SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE. Click back now if you don’t want to see what’s been datamined!
So far, the following information has come out of the datamine:
- Pokémon Sword and Shield have 435 Pokémon programmed in the game, including the Bulbasaur line, Squirtle line, Mew, Mewtwo, Celebi, Jirachi, Galarian Darmanitan (Zen Mode), Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldeo, Resolution Keldeo, Reshiram, Zekrom, White Kyurem, Black Kyurem, Rowlet line, Litten line, Popplio line, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Marshadow, Zeraora, Meltan, and Melmetal. Gigantamax Snorlax, Gigantamax Gengar, Gigantamax Orbeetle, Gigantamax Toxtricity, Gigantamax Sandaconda, and Gigantamax Melmetal are also seen in the sprite datamine.
- This goes beyond the 400 Pokémon known to be in the Galar Dex. It isn’t known how these Pokémon will be made available to players.
- 126 moves, including the 36 Z-Moves and Partner Pikachu and Eevee’s 13 special moves from the Pokémon: Let’s Go games, have been cut. This list of cut moves includes 77 regular moves, like series staples Double Slap, Return, Hidden Power, and Bubble.
- Transferred Pokémon that know moves that are cut in Sword and Shield will return the following message: “This move can’t be used. It’s recommended that this move is forgotten. Once forgotten, this move can’t be remembered.”
- While Game Freak “scrubbed” all other entries for species outside the 435 ones mentioned above, they “forgot to change the max species ID in the game,” suggesting that a possible two new Mythical Pokémon could be coming in the future.
- Eevee evolves into Leafeon with a Leaf Stone and Glaceon with an Ice Stone.
- Charjabug evolves into Vikavolt with a Thunder Stone.
- The Starter Pokémon have the following Hidden Abilities:
- Grookey: Grassy Surge
- Scorbunny: Libero (same effect as Protean)
- Sobble: Sniper
- Starter Pokémon are Shiny-locked.
- Running works identically to the Pokémon: Let’s Go games.
- Sword and Shield do not have a built-in soft reset button combination like Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
